Study Away

The College Core Curriculum is intended to provide students with a foundational experience in the liberal arts at the very beginning of their college careers. In general—and with the notable exception of foreign language study—students should therefore aim to complete the Core before undertaking study away from New York.

First-Year Seminar
Students must complete a freshman seminar in their first year before they will be approved to study away from New York.

Expository Writing
Students must complete their Expository Writing course work in their first year before they will be approved to study away from New York.

Foreign Language
NYU’s global academic network offers extensive opportunities to begin or continue the study of foreign languages. For information, consult the course offerings on the Global Programs website.

Foundations of Contemporary Culture
• Texts and Ideas: Students must complete this course in New York before they will be approved to study away.
• Cultures and Contexts: Students should complete this course in New York before undertaking study away. Only a very limited number of Cultures and Contexts courses are offered at global academic centers. See the course listings for each semester’s offerings.
• Societies and the Social Sciences: Students should complete this course in New York before undertaking study away. Only a very limited number of courses satisfying Societies and the Social Sciences are offered at global academic centers. For information, consult the course offerings on the Global Programs website.
• Expressive Culture: Students should complete this course in New York before undertaking study away. Expressive Culture courses are, however, offered at a number of global academic centers.  See the course listings for each semester’s offerings.

Foundations of Scientific Inquiry
• Quantitative Reasoning: Students should complete Quantitative Reasoning before undertaking study away from New York.
• Natural Science I and II: Students should complete these course in New York before undertaking study away. Only a very limited number of courses satisfying Natural Science I and II are offered at global academic centers. For information, consult the course offerings on the Global Programs website.

NYU-Abu Dhabi
Substitution of courses from NYU-Abu Dhabi is available on a very limited basis. See the NYU-AD articulation for more information.

January-Term Restriction
In cases where a department course is approved to satisfy a component of the Core (whether offered in New York or elsewhere on the global academic network), note that such approval does not include January-term versions of these courses.
